During August 2009 I undertook a month's exchange with the organist of St Peter's Episcopal Church, Lewes, Delaware, USA. It rained — a lot — and over the course of a couple of wet days this anthem came into being. The words are included in the 1982 Hymnal of the Episcopal Church where they are set in four-line verses to Dykes' tune, St Bees.
This setting conflates two verses into two eight-line stanzas, the second beginning with a "descant" for sopranos and tenors. It is a simple setting for a choir of average ability, but hopefully not without moments of interest or challenge.
It was first performed back in the UK as part of a confirmation service at Pontefract Parish Church, where two choristers were among the candidates for confirmation.
